Sabarimala Iyappan viradham (Fasting) procedure
This is my second year taking up the Sabarimala Viradham. Last year I just felt I need to go to Sabarimala. I realized it was my call. It was June end I guess. I had no idea what are the do's and dont's during the fasting period. I did not know how to go or where to go.
One of my friend and his dad go to Sabarimala year after year. I knew he will be a good source of information. I gave him a call and found they are starting their fasting in July and planning for the travel for August 18th, 2013. I only called for information, but the set-up was already ready for me to join. I was able to connect the time I felt I need to go to Sabarimala. If you are wondering how we can go in August. Sabarimala Iyappan temple will be open every month for the first 5 days of the Malayalam calendar. Here is the link which will be useful if you are planning a travel like us,
First we need to understand the essence of the Viratha kalam (Fasting period). Each viradham has a purpose to prepare yourself towards a destiny or a direction. (Here you can read about Shasti Viradham if you are interested) During Sabarimala viradham period we need to give up all the worldly pleasure. We need to detach from all good and bad, what we like and dont like. Take us away from everything around us and stay focused on Lord Iyappan. This will give us a new look in to our self and the outside world. All the do's and dont's are again towards this same goal if you can start to relate it. The Viratha kalam also prepares our mind and body for the long trek to Sabari mala.
Now let us move on to the do's and dont's during the viradha kalam (Fasting period). This is the compilation of all the resources I went through from the web and what I have heard from others.
Do's and Dont's
- You need to have a Guruswamy who can guide you during this Viradha kalam. It is not advisable to take up the viradham on your own as you need the wisdom of a guruswamy to take you through the fasting period and to take up your journey to Sabarimala.
- Your Viradham starts by wearing Tulasi mala or Rudraksha mala or a Spatika mala with Iyappan dollar in it. You also get dollar with lord Ganesha or Murugar on the back side, you can wear these dollars too. You can wear the mala at a temple, your guruswamy's house or at your house. The temple priest can wear you the mala or your guruswamy of your mother.
- Wear black color dress as it denotes that we have given up the colors in life. After we have taken up a few years of fasting we can also wear Blue and Safron color dresses, this is purely based on your preference and there is also a meaning behind those colors if you prefer. But black made more sense to me at least.
- Daily pooja to be performed in the morning (Before sun rise) and in the evening (After the sun set). Take a bath before the pooja time. It is said in many references not to use Soap or Shampoo during this period. There is also counter argument as these rules were set before people started using Soap and Shampoo. The goal is to remain clean. If you can avoid Soap and Shampoo well and good. Otherwise you can use it, dont feel you are breaking any rule here. Using perfume and deodorant should be avoided.
- For pooja chant 108 saranam to Iyappan, make a small offering, raisin or Kalkandu or any fruit or any other prasadham which you can cook. Make it simple and practical as you have to offer twice a day. Here is the link for 108 saranam in English., Here is the link for 108 ஐயப்பன் சரண கோஷம் தமிழில் you can also download the 108 ayyappan saranam as a PDF file and print it from that links.
- Visit a near by temple at least once a day.
- You can eat to satisfy your hunger and not to fill your stomach. Have meals with rice only once a day, for the other time, have light tiffin items. Preferred to eat self cooked or home cooked food. Food has to be strictly vegetarian. If you can avoid garlic and onion, it is even better. For those who cannot have home cooked food, you can have in a clean and tidy place outside. All this is to prepare for the long trek once people use to take with self carried ration. This is also good for health.
- You must follow strict bramacharyam.
- Speak less as much as possible. Do not get in to any argument. Do not hurt anyone with word, thoughts or deed.
- You must sleep on the floor on a mat. You cannot use pillow for comfort. You can use a blanket if needed. All this must be used only during your fasting period. You must keep it away after you end your fasting period.
- Avoid attending marriages, new born ceremonies, death etc. You must be following a sanyasi's life and have to move away from worldly ceremonies. If you have to attend a death of your relatives, you need to remove the mala, leave it to lord Iyappan in your pooja room. When you are back, you need to take bath and have your mother or your guruswamy to wear the mala back.
- Always have scandal wood paste or Vibuthi or kunkumam on your forehead. It is a must to have all the time.
- You cannot shave or have a hair cut during the fasting period. If your profession deems you to be tidy, you can have a shave. Do not feel bad about it. You cannot also cut your finger nails during your fasting period. Make sure you keep your nails clean always.
- You need to observe the fasting at least for 41 days before you take up the irumidi kattu. If you are not able to do the complete fasting, it is suggested you visit Sabarimala without the irumudi kattu. It is the respect you pay to Lord Iyappan.
- For any reason your profession does not let you be away from a birth and death situation, you can take up the fasting without wearing the mala, but follow all the above rules. Before your irumudi kattu, you can wear the mala and proceed.

Very Useful!! Thank you Swamiji
ReplyDeleteVery happy to know it is helpful to you.
DeleteThank you for the information swamy.
ReplyDeleteYou are very welcome.
DeleteThanks for the info. I have a question. Is it okay wear maala for just 13 days and wearing maala means have to take Irumudi as you said it's not advisable if we are not fasting don't take irumudi.
ReplyDeleteNis, if you cannot wear the mala for 41 days, it is fine to wear for 13 days to visit Sabari mala. In any case you need to follow the viradham for 41 days to carry the irumudi.
ReplyDeleteMy son wear Mala. One of my friend mother expired. Can I attend the ceremony or not. Because my sin is under viradham.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry to hear about your friends mother. If you want to follow the right way, you cannot attend the ceremony.
ReplyDeleteBut in this age and time, there are changes even to the viradham itself. So I would say you can attend. Make sure you bath, wash your cloths, clean the house and light the lamp after you come back. If your son can be away during this, it will be good.
I hope this helps.
Swami Saranam. Why are you not allowed to cut your nails during the Vertham kalam?? In your DO's and Dont's you may advice your readers on Vertham kalam to start a conversation by saying the mantra " Swami Saranam "
ReplyDeleteIt is advised to be barefoot during your vratham kalam
Let me answer all your questions with little knowledge I have:
Delete1. Why are you not allowed to cut your nails during the Vertham kalam??
Ans: By not cutting nails you are giving up your comfort. In my personal experience having nails for those 48 days makes you conscious while using your hands.
2. In your DO's and Dont's you may advice your readers on Vertham kalam to start a conversation by saying the mantra " Swami Saranam "
Ans: This is needed to make sure you are thinking about Iyappan consciously and slowly even sub-consciously during the Vertham kalam. This also means your word and deed are in the name of Iyappan during this period.
3. It is advised to be barefoot during your vratham kalam
Ans: Yes, this is very important. a. You are giving away your comfort. b. You are preparing your feet to take on the journey bare foot. You will understand the importance of it during the journey yo Sabari Mala.
There are situations you may not be able to go bare foot (School, colleges, Offices), you can wear a footwear only on those situations if it cannot be avoided. Otherwise, waling barefoot is advisable.
Swami Saranam.
Thanks for your inputs. Will follow here after and this is my 3rd time with irrumudi.
ReplyDeleteVery happy to know you are blessed to carry your third irumudi.
DeleteVery useful post- Thanks a lot- Swamy Saranam!
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome. Very happy to know you found the information useful.
DeleteCan I know the actual date to wear the malai this year 2016
ReplyDeleteSarath, the date will depend on when you are planning to visit Sabari Mala. If you are planning your visit during the Mandala kalam, the temple will be open from November 15th, 2016 and stays open for 41 days. For Maraka Vilaku, temple is open from Jan 14th, 2017 and stays open till Jan 20th, 2017.
DeleteThere is no set date to wear the mala. It will depend on the individuals schedule of visit.
I hope this helps.
I want to do viradham for 41 days and want to go to sabarimalai .Please help me in chennai where I need to find a guruswamy and malai anithan and erumudi kattudhal process.
ReplyDeleteHi Saran, in Chennai you can wear mala in any temple. I prefer RA Puram Iyappan temple or Mahalingapuram Iyappan temple.
DeleteFor Irumudi kattu, you can get it done from Mahalingapuram temple. You can get the ticket for teh date of your journey and you will be assigned a time slot. Guruswamy's there will perform the Irumudi Kattu for you, after which you can start your journey.
I hope this helps.
My elder brother getting married coming December and as a brother I have important duties too for the marriage but I'm thinking to wear Mala too,I'm confused, what should I do?
ReplyDeletePravind,
DeleteI understand your situation. In this situation, I would suggest you to concentrate on your brother's wedding, as you would need to stay away from all activities during your viradha kalam. You can plan to go to Sabari Mala during any of the months as the temple will be open for 5 days all the months.
This page will have temple opening and closing days,
http://www.sabarimala.org/timings-or-facilities.htm
I hope this will solve both your concerns.
Hello,

Swamy you can go their with out any help. Get the Mala and the dress code as Hari Swamy has mentioned above. Post that if ur a 1st time visitor ensure u take bramachari vrath for around 41 to 48 days. post that start ur journey by lightning a lamp at your home. You can catch an train which comes all the way from bombay to Sabrimala. From there you can ask any one they will guide u to Mala. Post you come down you can get help from gurusamy in Sabrimala who can help you with with irumudi.. Then starts the journey to visit our Lord ayappa. Every one knows hindi there so kindly don't hesitate to ask or worry about it.
DeleteSir, please advice, I'm wearing Mala for the first time, I work a software company and it is mandatory to wear footwear. Please advice, I really want to wear Mala and I don't want to miss the opportunity of not wearing the mala for 41 days for a mere footwear. How to deal with such situations.
ReplyDeleteIf it is mandatory for your job, you can wear it to work. You will not break the fasting by doing so. Rest of the time, you can avoid wearing any footwear.
DeleteI hope this helps.
Sir, please advice, I'm wearing Mala for the first time, I work in a company and if whether it is mandatory to wear other than black color dress only in office premises than what should i do? and where should I find the guruswamy in hyderabad?.Please advice, I really want to wear Mala and I don't want to miss the opportunity of not wearing the mala for 41 days for a mere dress or footwear. How to deal with such situations.
ReplyDeleteReply
Hi Ganesh,
DeleteYou can follow the dress code as per your work demands. It will not affect your fasting. Work is god. You can have sandal wood paste and vibhudi on your forehead, which I hope will not be against your office policy. Offices would not mind with beard.
It is best to have a guruswamy while you are fasting and while you are taking up the journey to the Sabari Mala. For any reason you are not able to find a suitable Guru Swamy, you can take lord Iyappan as your guru and start your fasting. He will guide you through the journey.
All the best. I am happy you are taking all the effort to be true during this fasting period.
Regards,
Hari Prasad S
And if whether it is mandatory to call men as swamy and woman as matha or swamy in office premises when if it is difficult to do so? what other alternate option exists to call them while we are in viradha kalam? please help me swamy to resolve my problem
ReplyDeleteThe reason for calling Swamy during fasting period is to consider everyone as god and to keep reminded of Iyappan every second. It will not be easy for you to maintain it at work. You can go on as usual. It is advisable at least to address other Swamy's as swamy when you meet them.
DeleteI hope this helps.
Regards,
Hari prasad S
Wow swamy u r simply awesome....u r helping the swamies to know every thing u know about it...i think that ayappa is helping everyone by u....i am happie to know wt i dnt knw and also to c u helping other to clarify theirs doubt...
ReplyDeleteHi Bob,
DeleteThanks for your comment.
I am doing very very little with what I am capable of. I feel blessed to be able to spread the information and knowledge about Lord Iyappan and the fasting process.
- Hari Prasad S
sir is it compulsory for interested persons to follow fasting compulsory for 41 days or above to carry irumudi to the lord? or is there any alternate option to wear the the mala as well as black color dress(at sabari itself) at the date of our journey to sabarimalai temple? And in this case can we have irumudi to lord?
ReplyDeleteGanesh,
DeleteIt is compulsory to observe fasting for 41 days. For any reason you will not be able to maintain all the rules, you can observe the fasting without wearing the mala.
You can fast for 41 days wear the mala right before irumudi, then take the irumudi to go with your journey.
If you cannot fast for 41 days even without wearing the mala, you can go to sabarimala without taking the irumudi. Only difference is that you cannot take the 18 steps. You can take the side steps and see lord Iyappan.
Regards,
Hari Prasad S
Sir When somebody undertakes the 41-day fast, whether he must go about it quietly alone without causing inconvenience to his family or whole family members like his mother, father, brother should also do and follow fasting rules like not cooking and eating non-veg in home even though when a person is staying away from his home during his fasting period?
ReplyDeleteGanesh,
DeleteWe commit as an individual for this fasting and do not commit our family to it. This will be base of my answer.
Before we start the fasting we need to get the permission from our parents and spouse so that they can support us during this time.
In the olden days people leave their home, stay in temples or mandapams for 41 days for fasting. Days have changed. We need to stay with our family.
Considering that you are the one who is taking up this fasting, it is not mandatory for your other family members to follow the rules. If they are living with you, then for you to go on with your fasting, it is important they also follow it with you by not cooking or eating non-veg in the same house.
I hope this helps.
Regards,
Hari Prasad S
sir if in those 41 day fasting period in my home itself some food which should not be taken is taken by me or by my family members knowingly or unknowingly then irumudi should be taken by me after wearing the mala at sabarimala itself or not? and what kind of food to be taken by me and which terms and conditions should be maintained in home by me as well by my family members to fullfill sucessful fasting of 41 days?
ReplyDeleteGanesh,
ReplyDeleteFirst we need to understand why the food restriction.
If this was in the olden days, this was to prepare ourself to be self sustain with what ever food we can carry on our head during the complete journey through the forest. It was done only on periya padhai with no routes like we have now.
We eat only to quench our hunger. The amount is until we no longer feel hungry. This will depend from person to person. You cannot take non-veg. Avoid spicy food if possible. One step more will be to avoid Onions and Garlic as well.
Your family if they want to participate with you. They can just avoid Non-veg and it will be fine.
If you are wearing the mala and taking up the fasting. Then there is no questions of not following the rules. If you will be fasting without wearing the mala, please follow as much possible without taking any non-veg. If you do consume non-veg then you can avoid carrying the Irumudi to visit the temple.

Hari Prasad S
Hi,
ReplyDeleteSwami Sharanam! Me, father-in-law, mother-in-law, my daughter(first time) are planning to go to sabarimala this year and we are on Vratham. unfortunately, my father-in-law's mother's elder sister expired before 3 days. Can my father-in-law is permitted to go this year to sabarimala? if NOT, who all are have restrictions to go this year. Please advise.
Thanks
Rajeev,
ReplyDeleteAll of you can go to Sabari Mala. In this case, you will not be mourning the death, as the person will be from your father-in-law's mother's side. So you can continue with the viratham.
Regards,
Hari Prasad S
Hi,
ReplyDeleteWhat about my father-in-law. Is he allowed to go?
Rajeev,
DeleteYour father in-law can also join as she is from his mother's side. If she was from his father's side, then he cannot take up the fasting or visit Sabari Mala.
I hope this helps.

Swamy Saranam wanted to know in fasting period is it advisable to watch TV.
ReplyDeleteHi Ajit,
DeleteYou would need to refrain from watching TV and movies for entertainment purpose. If it is for informational purpose, you can. The reason again is to keep away from worldly pleasures.

Swamy Saranam wanted to know in fasting period is it advisable to watch TV.
ReplyDeleteSwami Saranam,
ReplyDeleteThis is my first time to have irumudi and first time to go to Sabarimala. Sounds its a call from Lord Iyyappa. I am happy about it. Started my vratham today. Honestly, very much confused with lots of information on same topic over here in my place. Some temples are getting commercialized and fixed rates for maalai, irumudi, etc and further demands are there like compulsary bhajan at home which costs over 10k. for gurusamy 2k, etc etc. On hearing this years back, i dropped my wish to go to sabarimala. But this year, i made my decision , just to follow rules and put irumudi in one iyappan temple with a guruswamy and go to malai with two friends. Correct me if i am doing anything wrong.
Please explain the procedure of removing mala...
after having darshan in sabarimala, should we go straight to home or shall we visit temples in kerala and come back to home?.
after having irumudi, shall we go to other temples on the way before going to sabarimala or should we go straight to malai?.
Ajit,
DeleteVery happy you realized that you got a call to visit Sabarimala.
1. Fee for guruswamy and bajan: Guruswamy is someone who's duty is to share his wisdom. It cannot be commercialized. If the fees is for travel, irumudi etc, then it will depend on the service. Bajhan is not compulsory. As per your capacity and heart willing if you can feed just one needy person that will be equal to serving 100 persons.
2. Removing Mala: You can remove the mala in a nearby temple or your mother can remove it for you or you can yourself remove it.
3. Visiting other temples: You can visit other temples after visiting sabarimala. There is no restriction.
I hope I have answered all your questions.
Regards,
Hari Prasad S
Going with friends: You can accept the irumudi in any temple and start your journey. If you are accompanied by a guruswamy they will share their knowledge. If not, there is no hard and fast rule to not go with just you friends.
Delete- Hari Prasad S
Swami Saranam. All my doubts are cleared. Thank you so much. Its just my mind, body and soul must be clean and pure to have darshan of Sabarivasan. Thank u so much.

I am a doctor working in government hospital. I am dealing with deliveries(childbirth) and newborn care almost daily. I cannot avoid this. I want to put mala this year. Kindly give your guidance regarding this. Even if it is accepted for profession sake, will my mala affect the babies?
ReplyDeleteRaj,
DeleteYou can initiate the viradham and go on with it as normal. You can wear the Mala before irumudi as you have to deal with life and death. It is also advisable as women will tend to keep away if you are wearing mala, which will be a difficult situation for them as well if they also follow the rituals.
Except for wearing the mala before irumudi, everything will remain the same.

Hari Prasad S

Swami Saranam-
ReplyDeleteSir, Is it 41 days or 48 days of fasting?
The fasting is for one mandalam. According to our ancient medical science, one mandalam is from the full moon day to the next full moon day (29.53 days) + day till ekadesi (11 days) which will be 41 days.
DeleteRegards,
Hari Prasad S

DeleteI am planning to put Mala on Wednesday 16/11 since its a good day to do so and i am planning to have the swami dharshnam on 2nd of Jan as i am walking through the Peru vazhi which opens on 1st of Jan(if iam not wrong)... And is it ok if the fast exceeds 41 days? because for me from putting mala to swami darshnam its 46 days. Kindly advice.
Yes, you can fast for more than one 41 days. The minimum requirement is to fast at least for one mandalam to season your mind and body.

ReplyDeleteI desperately wanted to go to Sabarimala this year and am all set to put mala this weekend. now I have a doubt if I can go as my dad's brother expired 2 months back. I prayed to come this year when my son was sick and I do not want to cancel it. Any remedies? my guruswamy told not to go but if very much desperate then he asked me to do pooja to my family god and then put mala. please share your thoughts ASAP
ReplyDeleteHi Sooraj,
DeleteI can understand your situation.
Let me be frank here. Your prayer was to come to Sabarimala if your son gets well. The supreme power controls everything you ask for it or not. for humans, plants and animals. In your case your son is well now. It was as per the supreme powers plan for your son or due to your prayers. In any case it cannot be a case where you need to pay a price for your prayers to be answered. Will our lord wait for a pay back for him to do good things for us or bad things to teach us a lesson for a larger task in life. In this case you need not feel guilty for no going to the temple as per your prayers. Our lord is beyond what we can define and beyond what we define is his pay back. If you want to feel good, I would recommend you to provide a meal for a needy person in the meantime. You can go to Sabari Mala next year.
As your father's brother has passed away, you cannot go to the Sabarimala for one year.
Regards,
Hari Prasad S

For Irumudi, you can gather information from Mahalinga puram Iyappan temple. They can take care of the whole process. If you are planning to join a group and travel, I may not have enough information. Lets see if anyone else is aware of any group that travels this season.

ReplyDeletewhat should i do for the veetu pooja, i am new
ReplyDeleteso far, i have said the 108 chants and payed to ayyapan.
Hi,
DeleteAfter taking bath, you would start your pooja directly. You can start the pooja by lighting the lamp and offering flowers for the lord. This will follow by the 108 chants. Then you make a small offering. It can be sugar candy or panagam or raisins or pongal or payasam. Depending on your availability and feasibility. End it with a incense stick (Agarbathi) and deeparadhanai.

DeleteI am living in bachelor room at Chennai. How to follow food virtham in home and office. Thanks in advance.
Prabhu,
DeleteIt is best if you can cook at home. If not, have your food in a veg outlet. Have food to quench your hunger than to please your taste bud or to fill the stomach. You can have one meal with rice in a day. Rest you can have light tiffin.
I hope this helps.

Thanks Sami.
DeleteWe are planned kanni pujai on coming sunday. And we have small confusion for conducting this pujai on our home or at temple. which is best and good?
Prabhu,
DeleteIt will depend on the feasibility to accommodate people and to perform the pooja. If you can perform the pooja in your house, it will be good. For any reason you cannot manage in your house. You can definitely go ahead with the pooja in a temple.

ReplyDeleteSwamy I have a small confusion.
This is for 4th time I'm in deeksha.
In April 2016 I've taken the Deeksha for 3rd time as I wanted to visit the lord with irrumudi.
Now I'm in deeksha and going to sabarimala for Mandala pooja next month..
Will this count as 4th time or 3rd time.
Hi Vijay,
DeleteThis will be considered as the forth time you are going to Sabari Mala. In terms of consecutive years, this will be third year.

So should carry GADHA
DeleteI am going to put maalai tomoro.. I hav few doubt like can I listen to songs when I'm travelling.. As I am studying away from my home town.. And can I go to sabarimalai without gurusamy.. As my friend and me are planning to go since he also have put maalai...pls reply..
ReplyDeleteHi,
DeleteYou cannot listen to movie songs. If you are listening to Iyappan songs, then it is fine.
You can go to Sabarimala without a Guruswamy along with you. You can plan for the trip yourself.

ReplyDeleteMy husband taken up sabarimala vratham for the 1st time. But unfortunately my maternal grandfather expired. I haven't went their house which is in my native but my mother went there and came. If my mother comes to my house will it affect my husband's vratham. Note:- She is not my Biological mother.
Please advise swami.
It will not affect the vratham. If she is not coming coming directly from the funeral then nothing to worry.

Thanks for clarifying. I was worried as I being a working women only my mother needs to take care of my son at home.

If somebody did masturbates in during viratham time without knowing rules... Its affect him or not..... Any pariharam is availale... Ayyappa will forgiven him
ReplyDeleteRaja,
DeleteIf it is was unintentional, like a wet dream, then it is a mind over the body situation. Can ignore and move forward.
If it was intentional, it is a clear break in brahmacharyam and the viradham one had committed before wearing the mala. Only way to make up will be to take up viradham for 41 days from the day the break happened. It is a new start to season the mind and the body.

Moganavani,
DeleteI can understand the situation. This is the case with a majority of our working population. We have to move on with the viradham with necessary changes that is needed to accommodate our work schedule.
If he is up late and still performs his pooja it should not be a problem. If possible, you can clean the place and light the lamp once you are up.
I hope this will help you.

This is my first time for sabarimala, today(24/11/2016) i have put mala from the Ayyappan temple at Banaswadi (Bangalore). As being first time i have got company from neighbor to visit Sabarimala, but due to his work constraint he wants to visit by Dec 30th. In that case i would have completed only 37 days, Is it okay to visit Sabarimala with Irumudi kattu and come back & continue my viradha period till Jan 7th to complete 45 days. Is it possible, please provide me clarity on this.
Rajesh,
DeleteYou are very welcome. I am sharing my limited knowledge with in my ability and learning in the process.
Yes, given the situation and this being the first time. You can go on Dec 30th and complete your viradham after getting back from Sabari Mala. From next time on, you can plan ahead.

ReplyDeleteAbi,
DeleteIf you are planning to take the irumudi but not able to wear the mala for any reason, then you need to follow all the do's and dont's that you would follow if you were wearing the mala as much as possible, apart for the reason you are not able to wear the mala.
If you are not planning to take the iru mudi, then you need not follow the same rules as others.

Swami Saranam, It is good to prepare and freshly cooked food. If for any reason you are not able to have fresh food. Then you can find alternatives.
DeleteFor morning/evening pooja: After taking bath, you would start your pooja directly. You can start the pooja by lighting the lamp and offering flowers for the lord. ReplyDeleteThis is my first time to sabarimala and I am about to finish 41 days fasting. But unfortunately i got ejaculated yesterday during sleep. Will it affect affect my vritham...I have been following proper brahmacharyam for these days...I am feeling really bad now because of this.
Hi,
DeleteIf it had happened unknowingly then you can ignore it. Seek forgiveness from the lord and ask for his blessings to complete the viradham.
As this is unintentional, you need not feel bad about it. It is body over mind, where you have limited control.
I hope I have answered your question. Sorry I was not able to get back earlier as I was traveling for the past 4 days.

Pls help me out...
Saranam ayyapaa
Hi,
DeleteYes, the house has to be kept clean to have Iyappan photo in the house. You can at least mop the house once a day. It is necessary to keep Iyappan photo in house and worship during the viradha kalam.
After viradha kalam, you can wrap up the photo and keep it in a loft until the next viradha kalam as you cannot keep the house clean and perform the pooja daily as you would while you are fasting.

Hari Prasad S
I am Planning to wear mala from Dec 1 to 31 days , This is my first time (Kanni Sami) .
ReplyDeleteIs there any compulsion to keep 41 days fasting for irumudi..
Please reply me
Karthik,
DeleteYes, it is necessary to maintain the fast for one mandalam (41 days) to carry iru mudi to the temple and climb up the 18 steps. If for any reason you are not able to complete the fast before you go to the temple, you can finish the fast after you are back.
Regards,
Hari Prasad S
Thanks for your reply swami,
DeleteI don't have any problem to continue my fast for another 10 days..
But please tell me, with 31 days fasting i can go with irumudi??
Karthik,

ReplyDeleteThis is my first time to sabarimala (kanniswami)...i am following 41 days vritham also. I have put maala from a nearby temple where I stay. Somebody told me that after coming from sabarimala, i should remove maala from the same temple where i put. Is this correct Swamiji? Please advice...
Hi,
DeleteThis is not true. It is not necessary to remove the mala from the same place you had accepted your mala.
You can remove it from any temple or at your guruswamy's house or you can also remove it in your home. Your mother can remove or your yourself can remove it.

Hari Prasad S
Thanks a lot Swamiji for your advice...Thank you very much for clarifying a myth.
DeleteMr hari actualy who are the creaters like this viratham rules
DeleteMr hari actualy who are the creaters like this viratham rules
DeleteMr hari actualy who are the creaters like this viratham rules
DeleteSomu Nath,
DeleteI can answer based on what I have heard and have read.
The rules are practices to season ones mind and body for the travel to the iyappan temple through the dense forest during the time when there were no amenities available like now. These are practices that were followed for years, that has been evolving. The rules are based on the need to travel to the Iyappan temple in those days. The viradha kalam is a preparatory stage to take on the travel. One mandalam is the time needed for your body to take on any new change. That is why in ancient medicines, the time period of medication is in mandalam.
The whole fasting process is to prepare your mind and body for the travel. If you can relate all the rules we follow you will see this is more logical, spiritual than religious.
I hope I was able to shed some light. If there is anything specific, please let me know. I will answer if I am capable.

ReplyDeleteI am blessed with a baby boy on 23.11.2016, I wish to go to sabarimala on 05.01.2017. Already taking fasting from 1st day of karthikai. Is it allowable to visit ayyappa with irumudi kattu?. Moreover my son also wants to come to sabarimala for the first time. Minimum fasting day for him is 41 days or lesser days is applicable?
Kindly advise.
Regards
U.Nagarajan
Hi Nag,
DeleteYou can visit Sabari Mala as it is not within 14 days from the day of birth of your son.
Regarding taking your son: To carry irumudi he needs to follow viradham for 41 days.
Regards,
Hari Prasad S
Hi have a question...
ReplyDeletecan I do fasting for 30 days and visit Sabari Mala temple with Irumudi and come back home to continue the balance 11 days (to finish 41 days fasting) ? From 31st day after my return from Sabari Mala can I shave & continue my fasting ? Is this advisable ?
It is advisable to fast 41 days for irumudi. For any reason you are not able to complete 41 days, you can continue your fast after the visit to complete one mandalam. It is better to be unshaven during the fast.

ReplyDeleteThank you for those info shared..
This is the first time im wearing malai.can you please explain the important rituals that had to be followed while doing daily pooja and during the time of travel to temple and rituals to be performed on the temple.which 108 sarana gosham is correct as i see lot of different goshams.
Also few useful links that would be helpful.
thanks much.
Swami Saranam.
Hi,
DeleteI hope I have given the details for the above questions on few other blogs. Here are the links,

Regarding the 108 saranam, there is no definite answer as people have found many ways to praise the lord. We use what is mostly accepted. Few I have seen has added saranam with localized references. You can follow anything.

But it comes to my mind without me thinking about it... Wat do I do... These thoughts make me restless.. I just feel guilty all the time for having those thoughts.. .. please advice..
ReplyDeleteSwami saranamm
Hi,
DeleteDo not feel guilty. This is the time you are seasoning your mind and body to focus. This is the transition time. You will slowly gain control over your thoughts.
It is good that you realize that your thoughts are waving. This itself will help you take your thoughts to other things.
I hope this helps.

Heartobefore I couldn't have any intentions to put mala for swamy ayyapan. I am thinking that lord doesn't call for me to see him. Past ten to twel months I'm in lots of troubles . Restless, peaceless day to day. I lost my profession, savings, I built a home that is also stoped due to insufficient fund. Nowaday I dint have anything, everthing I lost after that I don't know what I am going to do hearafter. I visited many temples for my inner peace but nothing happened, later I came to know and insisted by my friends circle, they said to me put mala for sabari mala. After that you can have a bright feature. I missed Nov 16th because I came to know this last week itself. But I have a major problem so I couldn't keep fasting 41days. So I asked sombody who eldest and manytimes visited sabarimala. They said if it's not possible to put mala for prolong atleast out 3 days. Keep strong and do your level best, be honest and clean in your mind Lord will bless you, your sarrows will be changed. Now I am realised that. This is the real call for from swamy. If it's right or what can I do. I'm tottaly damaged pls give me your valuable suggestions
ReplyDeleteSwamy Saranam,
ReplyDeleteI recently started vratham for first time. Currently in US and would like to visit India and take up Sabarimala yatra after vratham completion which will be around Jan 13th. I would like to visit Sabarimala around 16th Jan when rush is less, but don't know anyone/group that I can join. Can you please suggest if I take flight to Kochi, how to take journey from there? Would it be safe? Can we climb Holy steps without Guruswamy?
Please suggest your opinion
Thank you,
Krish
Hi Krish,
DeleteHope this article will help you plan your way to the temple,
http://www.midsummerfrostbite.com/2014/08/how-to-reach-sabarimalai-list-of-routes.html
If you do not have any group to join, you can go to the temple on your own. It is very safe to travel. A little caution is needed like in any other crowded place anywhere. You can travel without guruswamy.

ReplyDeleteI already sent a question to you about my son 11 year who is wearing 2nd mala but now I having periods were we both are only staying alone. Now he is cooking food and eating but living in the same house in different room. Is this anything wrong?
Hi Anu,
DeleteSorry about the delay in my response. I was held up.
It is advisable not to have any contact with your son during your mensuration. If he can cook and have his food. Then that is best. He can take care of him in the separate room as you have said.
This is definitely not wrong. You are doing your best to support your son to go on with his fasting.
I hope this answers your question.

ReplyDeleteSwami as we should not apply oil to our head... I am going through heat problems in my body...
Please advice wat can I do without taking oil bath..
Please reply...
Saranam ayyapaaaaa
Hi,
DeleteI can reply with what I follow to maintain body heat.
- Take bath to cool down the body (That is the purpose of bathing)
- Start from your feet and then go gradually towards your head while pouring water. It will keep moving the heat upwards and subdue the heat.
- Drink water as and when you feel thirsty
- Take one spoon soaked Sabja (Thulsi seeds) along with butter milt or any juice you may have during the day
- Spatikam malai also helps in controlling body heat

ReplyDeleteHi Swamy,
ReplyDeleteIm a kanni swamy from Malaysia. Im a bit confused with the fasting rules. I have joined a group who are very friendly swamys like to joke and be playful. They will perform bhajans and abishegam for swamy everyday and followed by annatham all. They also will do some sex jokes and place bet on numbers all and earn money. Im a bit confused , i feel like something wrong but since im following them to sabarimala and they are seniors i just kept quiet and following with the flow. Whenever i asked them should we do this. They will answer me our heart should be good without any negative thoughts and that is what ayyapan expect. I also do notice they will have some vegetarian food from non vege restaurant and sometimes when i followed them i have to taste 1 or 2 spoon from the food, since they will ask me to taste it.
My wife and parents giving full cooperation and support during my fasting by cooking vege foods and my wife also following fasting with me. Im taking irumudi for my son who is not so well and im doing it sincerely for lord ayyappa.I decided to wear malai on 14nov after i dream about him. So pls advise me can i follow whatever this guys are doing. But they are good people obviously they won't smoke or drink all just abit friendly and good hearted guys. They have a own temple and going to sabarimalai for many years. Pls advise me.
